Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio

We traveled many miles these passed 3 days! (10/7- 10/9). Vasili really wanted to go to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. So, on Wed. (10/7) we broke camp at Kankakee, IL which is in a corn field about 50 miles south of Chicago and drove to Union, IL which is in another corn field about 50 north of Chicago! You've got to understand that all those miles in-between were filled with Illinois freeways under constant construction!

Upon arriving at our RV site, we unhitched the Saturn and proceeded to drive (through yet even more corn fields) north into Wisconsin to Milwaukee. For those of you who didn't know (like me) Milwaukee is right on the shore of Lake Michigan (west side), directly above the city of Chicago about 1.5 hours. ~ We didn't have time for much, so we headed straight for the water to stretch our legs. It was pretty chilly! We then hunted down "C.P.'s 5 O'Clock Steak House" on 24th street and had THE BEST steak dinner we ever had!! ~ Was it worth the 4-hour round trip drive?! . . . Vasili & Nick claim it absolutely was! (They both ordered the Porterhouse!)

The next morning, Thurs (10/8) began with rain and continued for most of the day. We drove from one side of Lake Michigan to the other side!! If you look on a map, Muskegon, Michigan is directly across from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Our good friends, Pat & Janice Carrigan live in Muskegon and we were able to get together and have dinner with them! It was so good to see them after almost 20 years!

It was rainy again on Friday (10/9) as we drove east across Michigan and into Ohio and landed in Sandusky, which is on the coast of Lake Erie. We spent 2 nights there mainly to "catch our breath" and do things like laundry and grocery shopping, etc. We had cable and a very fast internet connection! ~ yeah!!

Some of the changes we noticed as we left Illinois and Indiana behind, were that we were also leaving the corn fields behind and seeing more trees and woods with pretty ponds and small lakes here and there. The colors of the fall foliage have begun. We also had to change our clocks forward another hour and are now 3 hours ahead of San Diego time.

We head toward the Niagara Falls on Sunday (10/11)

We saw this pretty barn along the way

Corn, corn, nothing but corn fields

Entering Muskegon, Michigan
Muskegon is straight across Lake Michigan from Milwaukee, WI

Here Vasili is with our home away from home.
It just so happens that the owners of this KOA RV park
are from Tierra Santa, San Diego!

This RV park has been the most beautiful thus far!
We took a hike around the lake this morning

Doesn't this look like a Thomas Kinkade painting?
It's the RV park we spent the night at in Muskegon, MI

Vasili isn't happy unless he's fixing something!
And just like home, there's always something that needs fixing!

  1. The great Midwest! These are my old stomping grounds! It's not so bad with all the corn fields. As a teenager they were a lot of fun to 4 wheel through after harvest time (just like the Dukes of Hazzard)! You picked a good time of the year to visit, as all the nasty mosquito's are out of season. "Wisconsin Dells" is probably closed as well. Hope you had a chance to pick up some cheese.
    In Christ,
    Sudie
